Psychic Powers and Psychic Healing
Is psychic healing from God? A lady approached me for deliverance. She shared how her husband had a stroke and could only speak two words. She was devastated and wanted help. She revealed that they were seeing a psychic healer once a week. I asked if her pastor was aware of these visits. She stated that he was not only aware but expressed that, "if he was in the same position he would do the same thing."I explained to her that as a Christian she was not to see a psychic healer because their power was not from God. "Oh," she said, "this is the same gift of healing as the gifts of healing in the Bible." I asked her how the psychic prayed when they saw him. She replied, "He doesn't pray. We talk about the weather." "But how do you get healed?" She replied, "By a special power inside of him which he was born with. He heals you by touching you or looking at you." I proceeded to explain to her the difference between the gifts of healing that were psychic and gifts of healing that belonged to God. In Acts 19:13-16, the seven sons of Sceva tried to imitate Paul by using spells or incantations to exorcise or heal in the name of Jesus. We read what followed in verse 15, "And the evil spirits answered and said, Jesus I know and Paul I know; but who are you?" The spirits overcame them and wounded them. They found out the hard way that spirituality doesn't mix with psychic powers. Examples of psychic powers we see today are: hypnotism, fortune telling, astrology, healing by the power of the mind, seeking false interpretation of dreams, casting spells through amulets and charms, divination, telepathy, and other unusual para-psychological abilities. All who reject the Word of the scriptures and try to heal by using these powers are not of God, for it is only God who has the power to heal and He heals us through the shed blood of His Son, Jesus Christ. I Peter 2:24 speaks of Jesus when it says, "Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye are healed." KJV Some, like this woman, innocently get involved in these forbidden practices because of not being grounded in the Bible and also because the church fails to teach them. The only way Christians can guard against these deceiving methods is to study the Word to know the difference between God's way and Satan's lies. In contrast to psychic healings, we see in 1 Cor. chapters 12, 13 and 14, the gifts God has given to His children. The scriptures describe for us the functions of the many gifts of the spirit. Healing and wonders take place when God imparts these gifts to the believers. He equips them with wisdom, knowledge and discerning of spirits to guide them. God, through the Holy Spirit and our renewed mind, performs the inspired manifestations of these gifts. Because of the shed blood of Jesus Christ the gifts are made visible and edify the believers. As the recipients of these precious gifts we are to remain faithful to use the gifts as God enables (1 Tim. 4:14).
