Why has spirulina powder been called a superfood?
Spirulina the superfood
Spirulina is green/blue algae that are
one of the many organisms that give the green color to
stagnant ponds. Producers are careful to propagate only
the pure strains of it. It is grown in large basins. The
first thought might be to shun it, but actually, it is
an excellent food and has the highest concentration of
nutrients known, including having 60% protein content.
Spirulina and its relative, Chlorella, were introduced
to the market in the 1970’s. In the fall of 1981, an
advertising campaign created a huge market and many
suppliers entered the market.
Benefits of spirulina
Since then, the benefits of spirulina in
the diet have expanded greatly and it is one of the most
beneficial of all dietary supplements known. At 60 to
70% protein, it is higher in protein than any other
natural food. Spirulina is rich in vitamins and minerals
and other nutrients. Because of spirulina powder's extremely high
concentration of nutrients, it is very satisfying,
leaving one with little desire to continue eating after
having some spirulina.
Health benefits of spirulina
Ingesting only 2 grams of spirulina,
daily, effectively reduces the level of interleukin-4 in
the body, thereby greatly reducing allergy symptoms.
Spirulina also inhibits production of viruses.
Where to get spirulina
Spirulina available in health food
stores and it is relatively inexpensive, costing about
US$5 for 100 tablets, making it one of the best foods
that you can use for your health.
